While university provides a strong theoretical foundation, real-world experience is essential for launching a successful career. This summer, a marketing student at Newcastle University, Lydia Cooper gained valuable insights into the professional world through an internship.

Her experience highlights the importance of internships, bridging the gap between higher education and industry. Global HSE Group are committed to training the next generation in the fire safety industry.

Lydia’s Internship

Over the past 11 weeks, I have been fortunate enough to gain work experience at Global HSE Group in between my second and third year of my marketing degree at Newcastle University.

Despite the university being very educational, the experience and knowledge I gained this summer are things I would have never gotten from a university, so I am very grateful that Global has given me this opportunity.

I have been working alongside the marketing and sales team on a number of activities including:

  • Building business connections and spreading awareness.
  • Contacting potential clients using Glenigan software.
  • Managing projects using work management platform Monday.com.
  • Creating digital content with Adobe and Canva.
  • Creating content for PowerPoint presentations.
  • Website and social media write-ups.
  • Search engine optimisation (SEO) and analytics (which is something I hadn’t learned about before but found very interesting).

The highlight of my time at Global would certainly be attending the Housing 2024 event in Manchester, this gave me an insight into how businesses network at large events, helping me create a better understanding of the industry.

I’m most grateful for those who have helped me day to day at Global, especially Lewis, Callen, Henry and Eloise who I have worked alongside in marketing and sales. There is a great working atmosphere at Global and everyone is extremely supportive which has been a lovely environment to work in.

I am looking forward to applying my new knowledge into my final year projects at university and certainly feel more confident going into the third year.
