At Global HSE Group, we believe that investing in people, sharing knowledge, and supporting the next generation of engineers who will carry our industry forward is vital in fostering a culture of community, collaboration, and long-term success.
Every summer, we open our doors to students and graduates who are eager to take their first steps into the professional world. For us, these internships aren’t just short-term placements, they’re opportunities to mentor, to learn from fresh perspectives, and to reinforce the values of collaboration and care that define our business.
This summer, we were delighted to welcome Carlos Romero, who quickly became part of our team. His reflections capture not only the technical experiences of an internship, but also the importance of being supported and challenged in an environment that values growth.
This summer, I had the opportunity to join Global HSE Group as an intern within the Global Building Environments (GBE) team, where I was able to apply my mechanical engineering background to real-world projects while developing new technical and professional skills.
During my time at Global HSE Group, I contributed to a wide variety of projects and activities, including:
- Stage 3 MEP design using AutoCAD.
- Building and maintaining client and supplier relationships.
- Thermal and energy calculations.
- Hot water specifications.
- Attending multiple site visits.
- Smoke ventilation systems survey and diagnostics report.
- Developing a company sustainability report.
- Producing a CFD/FDS tutorial as my individual internship project for future internal use
- Attending CPDs to further my professional knowledge.
- Preparing Scope of Works reports.
- Supporting project management activities through the Accelo platform.
- Contributing to EPC assessments.
- Learned how to cost projects.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Global HSE Group, from the challenges of meeting tight project deadlines to the summer barbecue, where I had the chance to connect with colleagues outside of the work environment.
I am grateful to everyone at Global HSE for this opportunity, but I would like to say a special thank you to Srini, for his technical guidance; Dave, for sharing insights into the business side of the company; and Sam for his exceptional mentorship. Sam consistently supported my professional growth and development, entrusted me with exciting hands-on projects and set an excellent example as a manager.
This experience has allowed me to develop a great set of skills and given me strong confidence as I progress into postgraduate study. I look forward to applying what I have learned in future academic and professional settings.
